Research Methods for Product Design by Alex Milton
This book provides the reader with a comprehensive, relevant, and visually rich insight into the world of research methods specifically aimed at product designers. It includes practical case studies and tutorials that will inform, inspire, and help you to conduct product design research better. Product designers need a comprehensive understanding of research methods as their day-to-day work routinely involves them observing people, asking questions, searching for information, making and testing ideas, and ultimately generating 'solutions' to 'problems'. Manifest in the design process is the act of research. Huge technological advances in information, computing, and manufacturing processes also offer enormous opportunities to product designers such as the development of intelligent products and services, but at the same time raise important research questions that need to be dealt with. Product designers are, in many ways, best placed to address these challenges because of the manner in which they apply their design thinking to problems.Paul A. Rodgers is a professor of design issues at Northumbria University, UK. Before this he was a reader in design at Edinburgh Napier University, and a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Cambridge. He holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in design from Middlesex University and a PhD in product design from the University of Westminster. He has led several projects for research councils in the UK, and design projects funded by the Scottish Government. Rodgers has published more than 130 papers in book chapters, journals and conferences, including seven books. Rodgers sits on the Editorial Board of Design Studies and Design, Creativity and Innovation.
Craig Bremner is a professor of design at both Charles Sturt University and the University of Southern Denmark. Prior to this he was professor in design pedagogy at Northumbria University and professor of design at the University of Canberra, where he had also been dean of the faculty of design and architecture. With a degree in English literature, he studied design in Milan and wrote a PhD on architecture at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. His research deals with developing methods to discover how and why we don't know much about the experience of design, as well as finding ways to clarify the reason why not knowing is an essential and valuable beginning point of our practice.
