Poetry. Translated from French by Ron Padgett. PROSE POEMS is Pierre Reverdy's first collection of poems, originally published in 1915. Reverdy was born in Narbonne in 1889. In 1910 he came to Paris, where he knew no one, but he soon met Guillaume Apollinaire and Max Jacob, as well as Picasso, Matisse, Braque, and Juan Gris, who later illustrated his books. I loved its austerity, its spookiness, and what I imagined to be its cubism--Ron Padgett.Pierre Reverdy (13 September 1889 – 17 June 1960) was a surrealist and cubism-inspired French poet. Pierre Reverdy was born in Narbonne and raised in his father's home near the Montagne Noire. Reverdy was born into a sculpting family. His father instilled in him the ability to read and write. He went to Toulouse and Narbonne to study.
In October 1910, Reverdy landed in Paris. He met Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob, Louis Aragon, Andr' Breton, Philippe Soupault, and Tristan Tzara in the legendary Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre. Reverdy lived for his writing for sixteen years. Reverdy, who was naturally reclusive, began to withdraw himself from these circles in 1926, when he was 37 years old, when he left Paris, converted to Catholicism, and moved to Solesmes, the birthplace of the famous St.
The Abbey of St. Peter. He stayed there until 1960, when he died.
