From 1992 until 1999, David Madden was the founding director of the US Civil War Center, and he is now the LSU Robert Penn Warren Professor of Creative Writing, Emeritus. He was a member of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Advisory Board and the Louisiana Bicentennial Commissioner. He's written a number of nonfiction books, including four about the Civil War. He's also written eleven novels, including Sharpshooter: A Civil War Novel, and three collections of short tales, the most recent of which is The Last Weird Story. His collection of short tales, The Shadow Knows, was honored by the National Council on the Arts, and his novel The Suicide's Wife was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and adapted into a CBS film.
Madden has spoken at over 200 colleges and conferences about the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, fiction, and a range of other topics, as well as giving dramatic readings of his work. He was born in east Tennessee and currently resides in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
