Rex Conway's first book, Rex Conway's Steam Album, was a wonderful miscellany of images that introduced a remarkable archive of railway photographs. This book takes the reader on a steam-hauled journey on the Midland Region from Crewe, to Manchester and the industrial heartland of Lancashire, and through Cumbria to Carlisle during the golden age of steam, with many diversions along the way. This is the second in a series of books that will explore each of the BR regions. All the photographs featured in this book have been specially selected from Rex's phenomenal collection of over 65,000 images and the book is sure to appeal to railway enthusiasts far and wide.

Rex Conway started work in 1952 with the Bristol Evening Post as a trainee photographer. After three years as an RAF photographer with Coastal Command he rejoined the Post, remaining with the paper until the 1980s when he became a freelance photographer. From the 50s to the 80s Rex took approximately 25,000 railway photographs; since then he has added other collections - so his archive now numbers over 65,000 images, with the earliest dating from 1900.
