Rex Conway's Southern Steam Journey: Volume One by Rex Conway
Join Rex Conway on a remarkable steam-hauled journey on the Southern Region. Starting in the capital during the golden age of steam, we encounter places such as Clapham, Reading, Basingstoke, Eastleigh, Southampton, Salisbury and Weymouth before heading down towards Devon and Cornwall. There are many diversions along the way, not least of which a jaunt around the Isle of Wight. Seen here are plentiful images of engine sheds, stations, signal-boxes, and a fabulous selection of engines and railway staff going about their daily business. All the photographs featured in this book have been specially selected from Rex Conway’s phenomenal collection of over 65,000 images and the book is sure to appeal to railway enthusiasts far and wide.
Rex Conway started work in 1952 with the Bristol Evening Post as a trainee photographer. After three years as an RAF photographer with Coastal Command he rejoined the Post, remaining with the paper until the 1980s when he became a freelance photographer. From the 50s to the 80s Rex took approximately 25,000 railway photographs; since then he has added other collections - so his archive now numbers over 65,000 images, with the earliest dating from 1900.
