Rex Conway's Steam Album by Rex Conway
Rex Conway's first three books were published in the mid-1970s, and since then his archive has been gathering dust. Through this selection of 200 outstanding photographs, we find out how Rex became interested in railways, and accompany him on the numerous expeditions he undertook around the UK during the golden years of steam. This first selection can only scratch the surface - and will leave any railway enthusiast wanting more.
Rex Conway started work in 1952 with the Bristol Evening Post as a trainee photographer. After three years as an RAF photographer with Coastal Command he rejoined the Post, remaining with the paper until the 1980s when he became a freelance photographer. From the 50s to the 80s Rex took approximately 25,000 railway photographs; since then he has added other collections - so his archive now numbers over 65,000 images, with the earliest dating from 1900. Rex published three railway books in the mid-1970s, but a busy freelance career interfered with his publishing plans. Now he has retired he intends to devote much more time to books that draw on his archive.
