Rhetoric by Peter Dixon
First published in 1971, this book provides a historical account of the fortunes of Rhetoric. Beginning with a study of classical rhetorical theory and practice, it goes on to explore the impact of rhetoric on English literature and the renunciation of rhetoric from the late 17th century. The book concludes with a survey of the ways in which rhetoric was revived and re-modelled in the 20th century and its bearings on the practice and theory of literary criticism.
This book will be of interest to those studying English literature and literary theory.
Born in New York City, Peter Dixon was a bi-coastal kid as his father, a writer, and his actor mother shuttled between New York and Los Angeles. His love for the ocean is a natural result of beginning to surf when he was in high school, lifeguarding on Los Angeles beaches through graduate school, and beach life in Malibu, California, with his wife, Sarah, and their three children. Finding a career as a human factors scientist in a Santa Monica, California, think tank not to his taste, he turned to writing. The Complete Book of Surfing was the first widely read book on that wet and wild sport. He wrote the first Flipper television script, and several others for the series, followed by dozens of prime time teleplays while turning out twenty-nine published books. His recent novel Hunting the Dragon reflects his deep involvement with the sea and marine conservation. Attention, Les Enfants Regardent, The Children Are Watching, written with Laird Koenig, was translated into seven languages, and was awarded best thriller of the year in France. Alain Delon produced and starred in the motion picture. C@UGHT IN THE WEB brings to life Dixon's concern that TV and the Internet, while offering much of value, are also often a destructive force in the lives of children. He asks, if parents fail to open a child's life to the wider world of nature how will they learn to care for our earth and have compassion for one another?
