Richard Bean: Plays Two by Richard Bean

In "Toast" seven men come together to bake enough bread to feed the population of Hull. It's just another Sunday. The ovens are cranked up and running...but there's a spanner in the works which threatens bread production in Hull for good, and life as they know it for the men on the shift. In "Smack Family Robinson" things have changed since Dad set up the family business in the 60s: new products, more competition, and a bigger market. At the end of the day though, it's still all about cash and stock. But this is no ordinary family business - the Robinsons are drug dealers. Why has middle manager Stephen England (Mr England) got up in the night and defecated on the living room carpet? His wife Judith doesn't know, nor does his mother Irene. Only Andy, the gauche youth who regularly turns up uninvited to borrow his power tools, can save him (or destroy him). "Honeymoon Suite" deals with love. How can a union cope with poverty, corruption, his ignorance, her aspiration, an ungrateful daughter, no sons, infidelity with an attractive bloke on an evening class, God knows how many miscarriages and even murder!
Suddenly with four new plays opening within 12 months, Richard Bean has become the playwright of the moment and now, in Honeymoon Suite, his most prestigious premiere to date, he has written what seems like the perfect play * The Times *
Toast is as funny, touching, and brilliant an account of men at work as any we have had since David Storey’s The Changing Room * Financial Times *
A brilliant, black satire that plays on an Ortonesque reversal of valuesBean distributes deftly crafted, razor-sharp lines among a cast of characters who would sooner snort them than deliver them * The Spectator *
Funny, poignant and with a heart as big as a house, this is a rich Harvest indeed. * The Guardian *
Richard Bean was born in East Hull in 1956 and has worked in a bread factory, and as a psychologist, model and stand-up comedian. His play, The God Botherers was mounted at Synapse Theatre in New York in 2004, and Harvest opened at the Royal Court Theatre in September 2005 (nominated for the 2005 Evening Standard Award for Best Play and Best Play in the 2006 Olivier Awards, winner of the 2006 Critics' Circle Award for Best Play). Richard's many plays and adaptations are published by Oberon Books, both as single editions and in a first and this second collection.
