Rick Perlstein is the author of "Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America" (Scribner) and "Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus" (Hill & Wang), which won the "Los Angeles Times" book prize.
