Laurence was born in the Irish city of Dublin. At Oxford University, he studied business and subsequently IT. He paid for his own studies after moving to England and began rising at 4 a.m. to study and work at the same time. One of his first jobs was as a kitchen porter near the Bank of England, where he was responsible for wiping the plates of the well-connected. For years, he lived in squats in London and suffered.

Laurence's first story, about aliens getting lost, was published in a school newspaper when he was ten years old. He attended an author workshop 35 years later and was soon granted a publication contract for three novels. The Jerusalem Puzzle is his second novel.
