Coe is the author of a number of fantasy novels and short stories, both classic and current. He was the William L. Burroughs Award recipient. Children of Amarid and The Outlanders, the first two novels in the LonTobyn Chronicles, won the Crawford Prize for best first fantasy series at the International Conference on the Weird. Laws of Ascension was the first book in his Winds of the Forelands series, which included Seeds of Betrayal, Bonds of Vengeance, Shapers of Evil, and Weavers of War. Coe is a founding member of MagicalWords.net, a well-known writing blog.

His contemporary fantasy series The Case Files of Justin Fearsson began with Baen Books' Spell Blind and continues with His Father's Eyes, the most recent installment. Coe resides in Sewanee, Tennessee, with his wife, Nancy Berner, and their two daughters.
