The Romance of Tristan and Iseult by Joseph Bedier

Tristan, a Cornish knight, is sent to Ireland to rescue a Princess from and Irish warlord. Princess Iseult has been promised to King Mark of Cornwall. After a successful rescue, Tristan and Iseult fall into a love affair that is fated for disaster. Once returned to the court in Cornwall bad dreams give rise to suspicions of an affair. Tristan and Iseult is a tragic chivalric romance that has been retold since the 12th century. The story predates Arthurian legend and is thought to have influenced the romance between Lancelot and Guinevere found in the stories of Arthur.

Charles Marie Joseph Bédier, a French philologist who specialized in medieval literature, was born on January 28, 1864, in Paris 6th and died on August 29, 1938, in Grand-Serre, Drôme.
