Roots and Shoots by Roger Hurding
Roger Hurding's comprehensive volume traces the development of counselling and psychotherapeutic practice from the time of the Enlightenment. It gives an objective and sensitive account of secular theories and therapies before moving on to discuss Christian methods of counselling.
"The classic text - it is hard to envisage anyone training as a Christian Counsellor without reading it" -- David Depledge, Chief Executive, The Association o 20020401 'The different therapies are here, too..if it has been around for more than a year Dr Hurding has read about it, explored it with a sort of critical sympathy, and got it down in the book.' -- Richard Holloway, Bishop of Edinburgh 20020401 'Roots & Shoots is a scholarly guide to counselling and psychotherapy in a form which is easy to read and likely to be thought-provoking to even the most biomedically-bound general practitioner. Roger Hurding has achieved a seemingly impossible task in a gentle, intelligent way and deserves to be congratulated.' -- Nigel Stott, Journal of the Royal College of Gener 20020401 This book is very helpful for a serious student of Christian counselling. -- Rosemary Green 20020501 'This book provides an important source of understanding both for the Christian psychotherapeutic theory and for the psychotherapist of the Christian response.' -- Louise Marteau, The British Journal of Psychiatry 20020501
