Charles Chesshire has spent his adult life in horticulture and gardening. Now living near Ludlow in Shropshire, he designs and writes about gardens all over Britain. After spending 10 years designing gardens and teaching garden courses in New York and Long Island, he returned to England to become director of Burford House Gardens, the clematis specialists in Worcestershire. He helped to introduce a number of new clematis varieties, especially from Japan, and was curator of the National Collection of Clematis held there.
