The Royal Horticultural Society by Charles Chesshire

This enchanting volume explores the wealth and beauty of the entire clematis family. Second only to the rose in popularity, this versatile genus has a place in all gardens and an extra special role in small spaces. Supported by the Royal Horticultural Society, the book will inspire gardeners to experiment with the infinite number of possibilities open to them. The heart of the book is the portrait gallery, displaying, in exquisite detail, over 120 varieties of clematis. The practical section describes in clear terms, with the help of step-by-step photographs, how to plant, prune and train clematis, as well as how to propagate them. "Clematis" manages to simplify the diversity of the genus without sacrificing the detailed information that some gardeners may be seeking in order to enjoy them to the full.
'Mouthwatering close-ups and informative practical photographs in this useful and beautiful book' The Sunday Times 'A must-have guide for novices as well as those - many of us - who cannot grow enough of these beauties.' Evening Standard
Charles Chesshire has spent his adult life in horticulture and gardening. Now living near Ludlow in Shropshire, he designs and writes about gardens all over Britain. After spending 10 years designing gardens and teaching garden courses in New York and Long Island, he returned to England to become director of Burford House Gardens, the clematis specialists in Worcestershire. He helped to introduce a number of new clematis varieties, especially from Japan, and was curator of the National Collection of Clematis held there. In addition, Charles Chesshire currently gives garden tours and lectures widely on a number of subjects, including clematis, roses, garden design and Japaneses gardens, which hold a particular fascination for him. He is also consultant designer to Sudeley Castle Gardens. Charles is the author of the RHS Practical Guides on Clematis, Flowering Shrubs and Climbing Plants, and was the photographic editor for the Encyclopedia of Clematis.
