Rugby's Great Heroes and Entertainers by Bill Mclaren

Bill McLaren's career as a rugby commentator spanned fifty years and earned him enormous respect. He is therefore well placed to choose his all-time favourites from the world of rugby in this entertaining collection. His marvellous powers of description and huge depth of knowledge ensure that this is a comprehensive insight into rugby's most memorable moments and characters, including Jonny Wilkinson, Colin Meads, David Campese and Jean-Paul Rives.
Without his voice and his phrase-making, rugby broadcasting has never been quite the same* Independent *
Odds are that you will love the Hawick man's affectionate and expert musings on the best rugby players he has ever seen... every bit as enjoyable as his sadly missed commentaries. * Daily Express *

Bill McLaren was born in 1923 in Hawick. He initially hoped to play rugby for Scotland as a flank-forward, but was prevented from doing so by illness. He instead became a teacher of physical education, coaching some of the great players; Colin Deans and Jim Renwick were two of his star pupils.
Bill McLaren was television's voice of rugby for 50 years, earning world-wide recognition and great respect. He retired from the BBC in the summer of 2002.
