Running in the Dark by Rena Cooper
Running in the Dark is set in the west of Scotland, round about 1950. It tells the story of a young boy, Daniel Abercrombie, aged eleven, who is growing up in the difficult years following the Second World War. Orphaned by the war and a tragic accident on the railway line near his home, Daniel is cared for by his Uncle Barney, a man of many talents but a man who carries with him a terrible secret that haunts his days and, he believes, threatens to destroy his relationship with Daniel and their future together. In response to unexpected and alarming news about his uncle, Daniel takes to his heels and runs away from the only home that he has ever known. Keeping out of sight, he embarks on a journey to find help for himself and for Uncle Barney. However, it is a journey that is destined to lead him into unknown territory, darkness and, ultimately, considerable danger. Along the way, there is also a mysterious encounter that may never be explained.
Rena Cooper was born in Scotland but has lived in Lincolnshire since the 1970s. She has had a long career in education as a teacher, headteacher and a literacy consultant for The National Literacy Strategy. Now in retirement she has concentrated on her writing. This is her first novel.
