Sail and Oar: Drawings of Yorkshire's North Sea Fishery Before the Advent of Steam by Ernest Dade

First published in 1933, this book of a hundred of Ernest Dade's delightful pen and ink sketches of the North Sea fishing fleet in the latter part of the nineteenth century is not only a significant artistic achievement, but also an invaluable historical record.
Ernest Dade (1864-1935) was born in Kensington, the son of Fred Dade, an artist and photographer who moved to Scarborough in 1874, and at an early age Ernest, taking after his father, was to be found sketching the boats in the harbour. After a short period at sea he entered the Academie Julian in Paris in 1884 and completed his artistic education at the Scarborough School of Art under the artist yachtsman Albert Strange (1885-6). He shared Strange's passion for sailing and was later a founder member of Scarborough Sailing Club (1895) and its first captain. He went to London in 1887 and exhibited at the Royal Academy and at the New English Art Club. Returning to Scarborough he exhibited regularly both locally and nationally and became a founder member of the Staithes Art Club, painting and socialising with the then active members of the Staithes Group of artists. He married Maud Alderson-Smith in 1913 at St Martin's Church in Scarborough and once again moved to London where he worked for the rest of his life. His work is represented in the National Maritime Museum, The Imperial War Museum and many provincial galleries.
