He was included in a PBS documentary about Pittsburgh writers hosted by Rick Sebak.
He resides in Trafford, PA, the final village in the Electric Valley, with his wife, the writer Lori Jakiela, and their two daughters. He has won various honors, including the Andre Dubus Novella Award. He works in medical research and cares for the elderly.
