Santiago De Chile by Wayne Bernhardsen

This new title from Lonely Planet is for the traveller to South America. For surfers, skiers, city slickers and even oenophiles Santiago is one of Chile's most diverse regions. With this detailed guide one can explore this cosmopolitan capital.

Wayne Bernhardson initially visited Chile in 1979, during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, to write his master's thesis on llama and alpaca herding in the Park Nacional Lauca in the Norte Grande, and has since returned to further his knowledge and enjoyment of the nation. He has traveled almost 100,000 kilometers across Chile and its Pacific island possessions, as well as to Chile's Antarctic facilities in the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. Wayne obtained his PhD in geography from the University of California, Berkeley, but left academia to embark on a never-ending South American road journey that many university professors lust after. Moon Handbooks to Argentina, Buenos Aires, and Patagonia are also his works. Wayne has also contributed to Trips, the San Francisco Chronicle, the American Geographical Society's Focus, Business Traveler, Dupont Registry Tampa Bay, Postcards, National Geographic Traveler, Latin Trade, and Travel Holiday, among other publications.

He frequently conducts slide presentations about the places he writes about in his books. Wayne lives in Oakland, California, with his wife Mara Laura Massolo, their daughter Clio Bernhardson-Massolo, and their Alaskan malamute, Malbec (named after Argentina's characteristic red wine), while he is not in South America (he owns an apartment in Buenos Aires). He can be reached at southerncone@mac.com or at his website, southernconetravel.com.
