Savage Tide by Glenn Chandler

A gripping psychological thriller from the creator of TAGGART For Steve Madden, Brighton is no longer beaches, fish and chips and amusement arcades. It's also a place of murder. Estranged from his son and grappling with the jealousy that comes from watching your ex-wife getting closer to another man, his world is thrown into turmoil when he is called to investigate a particularly savage murder. But there is something else, something that will change his life forever. Dragged into the twilight world of nightclubs, drugs and prostitution, Steve is about to realise that being a Detective Inspector in a seaside town is far more dangerous than he could ever have imagined.
The long awaited debut crime novel from Glenn Chandler, creator of ITV's "Taggart" certainly reveals a vivid imaginationHard-paced and tightly written, this is a book you will be unable to put down till it is finished. Running through the streets of Brighton and the seedier parts of London, the underground rent boy scene and the murky world of clubs and drugs run side by side. Detective Inspector Steve Madden's life is pulled up short when called to a murder scene and the victim is found to be his son. A son whose life he knows nothing about and whose past has finally caught up with him in horrific fashion. Pulled off the investigation immediately he nevertheless takes it on himself to find the killer of his only child. Entering a world known but previously unexplored and certainly never mentioned in family life, he trawls through the low-life of the sea-side resort in search of the ever-elusive truth. A solitary character but well-drawn, Steven Madden could become a regular character if Chandler were to continue in this vein. A troubled personal life, an irregular girlfriend and the usual personal angst vis a vis the meaning of life and the universe, he is a likeable detective with plenty of scope for further cases. - Lucy Watson
