Scenes from the Back of Beyond by Meredith Oakes
Bill is sustained by his sense of culture and an improving world. The only thing the human race needs to do is learn. When he meets a person who embodies this idea, he naturally likes them. Especially if his wife doesn't. Set at the end of the 1950s, this title explores the comfort, hopes and fragility of family life in a new Sydney suburb.
Meredith Oakes' first play, The Neighbour, was produced at the Royal National Theatre, London in 1992, and is published by Oberon Books. The Editing Process was first produced by the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 1994. Her translations include The New Menoza by Lenz, von Horvath's Italian Night, and Bernhard's Elizabeth II.
