Originally published in 1851, Scenes from the Latin Quarter is Henri Murger's best-known work, and the novel upon which Puccini based his opera La Boh

Henri Murger was born in 1822 in Paris, the son of a German immigrant, and got only a basic education. Murger is most known for his novel Scenes of Bohemian Life, which was inspired by his time as a penniless writer living in a Parisian attic. He spent much of his later life, on the other hand, in a country residence outside of Paris, where he died in 1861.
