Jillian R Mann, MB, BS (Lond), FRCP, Hon FRCPCH, DCH Jillian Mann was brought up at Upper Farm, Didbrook and, like both of her parents, her uncle and her two sisters and brother, was a pupil at the village's school. After passing the 11 plus examination, she attended Pate's Grammar School for Girls at Cheltenham and from there went to study medicine at St Thomas's Hospital Medical School, graduating from the University of London in 1962. She continued her training at St Thomas's Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street until 1967 and then at Birmingham Children's Hospital, where she began to study the treatment of children with leukaemia and other cancers. In 1972 she became a consultant paediatrician at Selly Oak Hospital Birmingham with sessions also at Birmingham Children's Hospital and she moved to the latter full time in 1979 as consultant paediatric oncologist. One of the first doctors in the UK to specialise in the care of children with cancer, her clinical and research work in this field was recognised by the award in 1997 of an Honorary Professorship in the School of Medicine of the University of Birmingham. She retired in 2002. Jill always retained her 'roots' in the Cotswolds, visiting the family farm frequently throughout her life and retiring to the area, where she is active in the churches and other local activities and a governor of the village school.
