Serviss was born in upstate New York and attended Cornell University, where he majored in physics. He earned a law degree from Columbia University but never practiced law. Instead, he joined the staff of The New York Sun newspaper in 1876 and worked as a journalist under editor Charles Dana until 1892. Andrew Carnegie invited Serviss to conduct The Urania Lectures on astronomy, cosmology, geology, and related topics in 1894 because he had a gift for expressing scientific details in a way that was understandable to the average reader.
