Garrett Putnam Serviss was an American astronomer, popularizer of astronomy, and early science fiction writer who lived from March 24, 1851 until May 25, 1929. Serviss was born in upstate New York and attended Cornell University, where he majored in physics. He earned a law degree from Columbia University but never practiced law. Instead, he joined the staff of The New York Sun newspaper in 1876 and worked as a journalist under editor Charles Dana until 1892. Andrew Carnegie invited Serviss to conduct The Urania Lectures on astronomy, cosmology, geology, and related topics in 1894 because he had a gift for expressing scientific details in a way that was understandable to the average reader.
