Geboren am 02.09.1853 in Riga; gestorben am 04.04.1932 in Leipzig. Wilhelm Ostwald studierte ab 1872 an der Universitat Dorpat. 1881 wurde er Professor der Chemie in Riga; 1887 erfolgte der Ruf auf den Lehrstuhl fur Physikalische Chemie in Leipzig. 1906 legte Ostwald sein Lehramt nieder und zog sich als freier Forscher und Kulturphilosoph auf seinen Landsitz nach Grobothen bei Leipzig zuruck. In seinen letzten Lebensjahren widmete er sich dem Feld der Farbenforschung. Er erhielt 1909 den Nobelpreis fur Chemie.
