Scottish Nursery Rhymes by William Montgomerie

The first thing the majority of children learn by heart is a nursery rhyme. Norah and William Montgomerie have here gathered together over two hundred such traditional rhymes from all over Scotland. They will be new to some but old family favourites to many. To help those whose Scots is less than perfect there is a helpful glossary of 'Words you may not Know'. There are games, counting rhymes, songs, lullabies, riddles, even toasts, in fact something to fit every occasion. The lively, evocative line-drawings throughout the book give an added touch of character to this unique collection.

Poet William Montgomerie and his wife Norah, who lived in Edinburgh, collected a large and unique library of books, tapes and recordings of traditional Scottish rhymes, tales and games. They edited two collections of nursery rhymes, Scottish Nursery Rhymes and Sandy Candy, and Norah Montgomerie edited and compiled three story books for parents with young children. They are survived by a daughter who lives in Oxfordshire.
