"Scratch", A Salcombe Boy by Billy 'scratch' Hitchen
Easter 1963. The end of the school holidays are approaching, but instead of returning to school, Billy Scratch Hitchen ran away to sea - he was just fourteen years old. Before the age of nineteen, he had sailed around the world five times.
Billy “Scratch” Hitchen has lived a life that could never be repeated. One of the country’s first NHS babies, he ran away to sea at 14 and stayed there in various ventures for over forty years. Surviving storms and groundings, collisions and near fatal accidents, he finally came ashore and started two businesses which he has run successfully for the past 12 years. Both are still running today. Scratch still lives in Salcombe in South Devon.
