The Sea-Hawk by Rafael Sabatini
Sir Oliver Tessilian, a Cornish nobleman, is abandoned or betrayed by everyone he ever loved. He is framed for murder, affronted and shunned by his fianc and sold into slavery by his half brother. Tessilian converts to Islam and becomes the Barbary Corsair, Sakr-el-Bahr, Hawk of the Sea. He invades the coast of England on a captured Spanish ship and kidnaps the woman whose love for him had been poisoned by deceit and whose unforgiving repugnance had kept him from returning home. This 1923 Best-seller, doused with pirates, sea battles, villainy, romance and revenge, is considered one of the great classic swashbucklers of all time.Rafael Sabatini was born in Italy in 1875 to an English mother and an Italian father, both of whom were well-known opera singers. He created some of the world's most beloved heroes. He was educated in Portugal and Switzerland before moving to England at the age of seventeen, where he began writing after a brief spell in the business world. Despite being multilingual, he decided to write in English, arguing that all the best stories are published in [that language]. A collection of short tales inaugurated his writing career, which was followed by several novels. 'Scaramouche,' the much-loved narrative of the French Revolution, which became an worldwide bestseller, brought him fame.
Soon after, 'Captain Blood' was released, reigniting interest in his earlier works, which were rushed into reprint. He was a prolific writer for many years, but illness compelled him to stop writing in the 1940s, and he died in 1950. Sabatini is most known for his heroic protagonists and high-spirited novels, notably Scaramouche, Captain Blood, and The Sea Hawk, which have all been made into classic films. Drama, romance, and action, all set in historical settings, appeal to both male and female audiences.
'One wonders if there is another author so adroit at filling his pages with intrigue and counter-intrigue, with peril laced with romance, with a background of lush color, of silks and velvets, of swords and jewels,' as the 'Daily Telegraph' once put it.
