He has been a consultant to prisons and corrective services departments in Australia on a wide range of topics, including prevention of deaths in custody, staff training, and the interface between the prison and the mental hospital systems. His books include Police Killings in Australia, Outside Interference: The Politics of Australian Broadcasting, and Firearms and Violence in Australian Life.
