The Second Hand Boy by Jennifer Lane

When his best friend leaves town, Billy finds himself all alone as his world comes crashing down around him. Between swerving the bullies and looking after Mum, there seems to be no escape from his problems. However, when Mum gives him a second-hand book, everything changes. Billy finds himself drawn into an icy world of parallel universes where things aren't quite as they seem... The Second-Hand Boy is an emotional middle-grade story of overcoming mental health difficulties and loneliness, tackling life-changing problems head-on.
Jennifer Lane is an author and freelance nature writer. She has written for a broad range of outlets including the Observer, British Vogue, The Week, Dazed, the BBC, The Wildlife Trusts and the RSPB, and she won a Northern Writers’ Award for her children’s fiction, which looks at destigmatising mental health issues for a younger audience. Jennifer discovered the legend of the Pendle witches at a young age while exploring the moors of Lancashire and became fascinated by all things mystical. She is now a hiker, yogi and shamanic practitioner. Her first book for adults, The Wheel: A Witch’s Path Back to the Ancient Self (September Publishing), was published in 2021. Her YA novel, The Black Air was published by UCLan Publishing in 2023.
