Secret Aberdeen by Lorna Corall Dey
Aberdeen is not a boastful city, preferring to wear its many distinctions lightly. Which of its institutions produced three Nobel laureates and who became the first Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)? Which prominent Aberdeen doctor was involved in setting up the NHS in Britain? What has the popularity of coffee to do with Aberdeen's engineering past? Where in Nepal and the Falkland Islands would you find a not-so-little piece of Aberdeen?Aberdeen is the oil and gas capital of Europe but lights once glimmered on whale blubber before offshore gas came to town. When were town councillors accused of trying to plunder the Mither Kirk? Where might Robert Burns and Dr Johnson have slept in the same bed? Let's draw back the veil on Secret Aberdeen.
Lorna was born on the Black Isle in the Highlands but has lived in and around Aberdeen most of her life. Once a lecturer in History at Aberdeen College, she went on to teach in schools, later in collaboration with Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums, scripting and producing a DVD, called Object Lesson, as an aid for teaching local history using museum artefacts and an interactive website, Aberdeen Quest, based on Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums' collections. She has published mainly historical articles in Leopard Magazine, two local history books with Amberley and her first novel, Banana Pier, came out in 2011 with a second in the pipeline.
