Secrets of the Flock by J B Browne
In a remote Lake District valley, an elderly shepherdess struggles to help a ewe give birth to her lambs. In the East End of London, a family flee the violence of an abusive stepfather to a small Lakeland village, and the teenage boy starts to run the fells. In a prison in the Western Fells, an inmate begins to earn his freedom by helping a local farmer. Seen through the unfolding seasons, the shepherdess, the fell runner and the prisoner, each with secrets and a turbulent past, are thrown together. As the story reaches its climax, the characters must live with the consequences that their secrets have on themselves and those they have come to love.
`Sheep, fell-running, love, loneliness and dancing are all combined in this gem of a book set against the back-drop of the North Lakes' Jill Human; `A terrific love story overflowing with heartbreak and happiness set against the beauty of the North Lakes.' Amanda Shepard
J B Browne lives and works in the North Lakes and first saw a lambing at the age of six and a prolapse at the age of seven. The author’s mother was the original shepherdess and ran a small holding where prisoners came to work on day release. The idea came for the book, and the first three words, came on a rattling sleepless night bus from Sucre to Potosi. It has taken thirty years to bring to fruition.
