The Selected Letters of Tennessee Williams by Tennessee Williams
Extends the record of Williams' correspondence through the most successful and intensely creative period of his life. Featuring letters to Elia Kazan, Carson McCullers and Gore Vidal among others, the Broadway and Hollywood successes of America's premier dramatist are contrasted with a string of personal losses and a deepening depression.
"'His letters are among the century's finest' New Yorker" 'Anyone who knew Tennessee Williams will recognise in these letters his living human voice: about his friends, his loves, his hates and, above all, his workTo read these letters is to be directly in touch with him.' Sir Peter Hall 'These letter are shockingly readable. They offer real insight into Tennessee Williams's creative struggles and inner demons but also into his fierce idealism and Southern humour. You end up loving the man as well as the writer.' Michael Billington
Thomas Lanier "Tennessee" Williams was an American playwright, author of many stage classics. After years of obscurity, he became suddenly famous with The Glass Menagerie (1944), closely reflecting his own unhappy family background. This heralded a string of successes, including A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Orpheus Descending, and Sweet Bird of Youth. His later work attempted a new style that did not appeal to audiences, and alcohol and drug dependence further inhibited his creative output. Williams adapted much of his best work for the cinema, and also wrote short stories, poetry, essays and a volume of memoirs.
