Tsvetaeva led a life that was a history of loss: she watched the devastation of her country by a revolution she did not support; during the Moscow famine one of her children died in a State orphanage; her marriage and her many love-affairs were ill-fated; she lived abroad most of her adult life, and soon after her return to Russia, she killed herself.
