Self-sufficient Housing by Lucas Capelli
Created for students and professionals to inspire changes in how new buildings are designed and constructed, the Self-Sufficient competition challenged participants to design a self-sufficient and ecologically oriented dwelling. In the early 20th century, the concept of dwelling was defined as a machine for living, a reference to a new way of understanding the construction of inhabitable spaces that characterized the Machine Age. Today, a century later, we face the challenge of constructing a sustainable or self-sufficient dwelling, a living organism that interacts with its environment, exchanging resources, and which functions as an entirely independent entity. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAC) has collected a selection of entries presented during its 1st Advanced Architecture Contest: Self-Sufficient Housing.Vicente Guallart served as the head architect of Barcelona City Council from 2011 to 2015, where he was in charge of designing the city's strategic vision and key development projects. He also co-founded and supervised Catalonia's Institute for Advanced Architecture (2001-2011), where he oversaw projects like the Media House Project (in collaboration with MIT's CBA), HyperCatalunya, and the Fab Lab House. Guallart Architects, his professional office, has generated projects that have been widely publicized, such as the ports of Fugee and Keelung in Taiwan, or the Sociopolis neighborhood in Valencia, and it now works on projects of various proportions all over the world. He is currently working on projects in China and Russia. He is the co-author of the Metapolis Dictionary of Advanced Architecture and the author of works such as Plans and Proposals of Barcelona (2011-15) Geologic and The Self-Sufficient City.
His work has been shown at the Venice Biennale and the New York MOMA. In Washington, DC, the American Institute of Architects staged a solo exhibition of his work in 2010.
