Alfred de Vigny wurde am 27.03.1797 in Loches geboren; er starb am 17.09.1863 in Paris. Er stammte aus einer franzosischen Adelsfamilie. Seine Kindheit und Jugendjahre verbrachte er ab 1798 in Paris. Er besuchte das Lycee Bonaparte und trat 1814 als Fahnrich in den Dienst von Ludwig XVIII. 1825 heiratete er eine wohlhabende Englanderin und konnte sich beurlauben lassen, um ganz seinen literarischen Interessen zu leben, ehe er 1827 endgultig den aktiven Dienst quittierte.
