Shakespeare: Texts and Contexts by Kiernan Ryan

Shakespeare: Texts and Contexts focuses on both the texts of Shakespeare's plays, and the many contexts in which they have been produced, from their first performances to contemporary reproductions. This book introduces nine of Shakespeare's major plays: A Midsummer Night's Dream, Richard II, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure, King Lear and The Tempest. In addition, there are two shorter intervals, one describing the original theatrical contexts for the plays, and the other discussing the different textual versions of the plays available to us. The chapters focus on the critical practices of close reading, historical contextualisation and a lively question-and-answer teaching style. There is also detailed attention to Shakespeare on stage, on film and in the new communications technologies and new theoretical approaches to Shakespeare's plays.
'Excellent course reader' - Ann Heilmann, University of Wales Swansea 'Excellent secondary source for undergraduates.' - Nicole Pohl, University College of Northampton 'Taken together, the trilogy attempts in some sense to 'manage' the study of Shakespeare by breaking his work down into task-specific ideas and categories...The breadth of what is possible in a university-level Shakespeare/ Renaissance literature course is the great merit of the trilogy, and many will be excited by its variety.' - Claire Preston, Times Higher Education Supplement
KIERNAN RYAN is Professor of English at Royal Holloway, University of London and a Fellow of New Hall, Cambridge. He is the author of Shakespeare (3rd edition) and the editor of King Lear: Contemporary Critical Essays and Shakespeare: The Last Plays.
