She is Sitting in the Night by Oliver Pickle
Literary Nonfiction. LGBTQIA Studies. Art. Prose by Oliver Pickle. Art by Ruth West. Foreword by Rima Athar. An intergenerational collaboration featuring 78 papercut images from Ruth West's 1984 Thea's Tarot deck, coupled with author Oliver Pickle's contemporary queer interpretations of each card. Tarot, among other occult practices, is enjoying a resurgence in queer communities, but its practitioners often find themselves revising interpretative texts to fit their realities. By embracing an older deck and simultaneously developing current and re-visioned ways of interpreting its images and the cards' meanings in general, SHE IS SITING IN THE NIGHT, provides an informed, aesthetically strong, accessible book for feminists, queers, and tarot readers new and old.Oliver Pickle began conducting tarot readings on a regular basis after an unintentional debut as a professional tarot reader in 2009. He did them in clubs, parks, and on balconies. Oliver began writing about Thea's Tarot deck at the request of a good friend, a process that was both long and beneficial. Oliver is a Montreal-based, trans-identified writer, publisher, and editor in general. Their work has appeared in a variety of publications, including the Lambda Award-winning The Collection: Short Stories from the Transgender Vanguard (Topside Publications, 2012) and make/shift magazine. Oliver's first book, Gays in the Workplace, was published in 2011, and he is presently working on a collection of short stories.
