A Shell Eye on England by David Heathcote
Explores the particularities of the Shell Guides and examines them in a cultural context. From their inception in the 1930s as UK county guides through their development in the 1970s as international travel guides, the Shell Guides moved away from an often elitist and ironic style to a more Modernist and serious approach.
David Heathcote is a historian of architecture and design and a lecturer at Birkbeck College, Middlesex University, and the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture. He is the author of various books, including Barbican: Penthouse Over the City. He has also contributed to magazines and newspapers, such as Blueprint, the Daily Telegraph, Eye, Time Out, and Wallpaper.
