The American fleet aircraft carrier Hornet is widely acknowledged for the contributions she made to the war effort. Lisle A. Rose was an enlisted man in the U.S. Navy before gaining his PhD in history. He served in the state department's Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental Scientific Affairs.
