Ships and Seamanship: the Maritime Prints of Jj Baugean by John H Harland

Jean Jerome Baugean was a French marine artist of the Napoleonic era whose work is known by ship historians for the accuracy and detail of its depictions, which range from the largest ships of the line to tiny, now forgotten coastal craft, from most of the world's maritime nations. The largest corpus of his work was published in two books which went through numerous editions in the first half of the nineteenth century. This is a complete edition of his work, based on early impressions. Apart form his accomplishment as an artist, Baugean was also a practical sailor, and his engravings are more than merely ship protraits. He often used an illustration to demonstrate some specific point of seamanship, shiphandling or port activity. This book explains the significance of each of these engravings.
