He formerly taught at Yale University (1993-1996) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1989-1991), where he also served as department chair. He was also a professor at the Universities of Cambridge and St Andrews in the United Kingdom, as well as the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.
