Sing As We Go by Margaret Dickinson

Kathy Burton has had a tough life on the family farm in Lincolnshire, not least because her father is determined that she will marry a local boy whom she doesn't care for. Her escape takes her to the city of Lincoln where she starts work in a glamorous department store, and there falls in love with Tony Kendall, a man who has a reputation as a womaniser. But Kathy knows that Tony has a good heart, and spends most of his time caring for his possessive, but devious invalid mother. Kathy finds a social life in the local choral society, and when war starts, she enrolls as an entertainer for the troops. Sing As We Go is a rich, compelling regional saga, that portrays both the hardship and, at times, the fun of war.
Born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, Margaret Dickinson moved to the coast at the age of seven and so began her love for the sea and the Lincolnshire landscape. Her ambition to be a writer began early and she had her first novel published at the age of twenty-five. This was followed by many further titles including Plough the Furrow, Sow the Seed and Reap the Harvest, which make up her Lincolnshire Fleethaven Trilogy. She is also the author of Fairfield Hall, Jenny's War and The Clippie Girls. Margaret is a Sunday Times Top Ten bestseller.
