The Singular Cat by Jane Bown

This photographic portrait of cats contains 60 black and white photographs by The Observer photographer Jane Bown. An introduction by journalist and playwright Julie Welch sets the scene for the cats themselves, whether active or relaxing, indoors or outdoors.

In 1949, Jane Bown started working for the Observer. 'Photographers should neither be seen nor heard,' Bown preached, and an ideal shoot for her was one in which she exposed little more than a roll-and-a-half of film. In 1985, she was awarded an MBE, and in 1995, she was awarded a CBE. In December of 2014, she passed away.
