Sir Gawain and the Green Knight / Patience / Pearl by Marie Borroff
In this text, Marie Borroff's translations of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and "Pearl" are collected together with a new verse translation of "Patience", bringing together three of the four works by the anonymous "Pearl-Poet." A retelling of the biblical story of Jonah and the whale, "Patience" turns the Book of Jonah into a human comedy, though the poem also includes a number of serious passages that enlarge its meaning and reinforce its moral message. In "Patience", Jonah's sea journey, the storm that nearly wrecks his ship, his descent into the belly of the whale, his three days' sojourn there, and his adventures in and around Niniveh are all dramatized with brilliant realism.
Borroff, Marie: - Marie Borroff (1923-2019) was Sterling Professor of English at Yale University. Her verse translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was first published in 1967; it appeared together with her translations of Patience, Cleanness, Pearl, and St. Erkenwald in The Gawain Poet: Complete Works (2011). She was the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: A Stylistic and Metrical Study and of Traditions and Renewals: Chaucer, the Gawain-Poet, and Beyond (1962, 2003).
