Slow Winter by Alex Hickman
Alex Hickman goes in search of adventure as a news correspondent in the Balkans. He finds himself surrounded by key political figures, watching on as corruption and scandal take over the country. Haunted by his late father's thirst for adventure, Alex Hickman persuaded his local newspaper that it needed a Balkan correspondent. Talking his way into besieged Sarajevo, he watched as the city's fragile ceasefire fell apart. A series of chance encounters took him to Albania and a bizarre appointment with the government. Thrown into an alliance with the country's colorful dissident leader, he found himself occupying a ringside seat as corruption and scandal spilled the country into chaos. This is a moving story of one man's search for his father's legacy among the mountains and ruin of Europe's oldest, and most mysterious corner.
"As an evocation of the modern Balkans, it is the better of any academic work" The Times "The book is fiendishly well-written" Bristol Evening Post "The reader sees Albania through fresh, intelligent and inquiring eyes" Yorkshire Post
Alex trained as a management consultant in London. He left the City to work for a youth development charity in Africa where he spent his time persuading the private sector to engage in rural development. His experience convinced him that the future of the global economy depends upon its ability to integrate the world's poorest countries. He is now campaign manager for Business for Sterling, the UK's leading pro-European, anti-euro campaign. While Alex believes that joining the euro would be a disaster for the UK, he also feels that the European Union has a moral obligation to assimilate the new democracies of central and Eastern Europe. "The Euro looks set to create a rich man's club with stringent entry criteria that developing countries like Albania can never hope to meet."
