A Small Free Kiss In The Dark by Glenda Milllard

Skip's an outsider, he's never fitted in. So he takes to the streets. Life there may be hard, but it's better than the one he's left behind, especially when he teams up with an older homeless man called Billy. Then come the bombs which bring little Max and Tia - the sad dancer with a tiny baby - into Skip and Billy's world. Scavenging for food, living on love and imagination how long can Skip's fragile new family hold out as war grips the city?
This Young Adult novel is the bittersweet story of runaway Skip who is living on the streets of an unnamed country when war breaks outA boy without a home of his own, Skip finds an unlikely family among other outcasts. The book is written in a simple, direct style that makes the subject matter all the more painful. Skip is an artist and through his eyes we see the world in terms of light and colour - there is some beautiful, evocative imagery. The characters are finely drawn and engaging. A difficult subject is tackled sensitively and the writer manages to find beauty and hope even amid the brutality of war. * Newbooks *
A Small Free Kiss In The Dark is both sad and hopeful in equal measures. I found it an emotional and thought provoking book, beautifully written in Skip's young voice which is captured with startling authenticity. * Unknown *
