Social Class in Modern Britain by Gordon Marshall

This volume provides a comparison of class frameworks (Marxist, sociological and official) that can be applied to empirical data about inequality and conflict in contemporary Britain. It draws upon an extensive national survey and is part of a project on social class and class consciousness. Alongside the British research, similar studies being undertaken in North America, Europe and Australia will provide a set of comparable analyses. The book addresses the key concepts of gender and class. Other important topics include sectionalism among the workforce, privatism of families and individuals, fatalism, sectoral production and consumption cleavages.
Edited by Professor Luc E. WEBER and Sir Howard NEWBY, this book is a compendium of 20 contributions prepared by leaders of the world's most distinguished universities for the XIth Glion Colloquium which took place in Switzerland in June 2017. Professor of public economics at the University of Geneva, Luc Weber served for more than 30 years in Higher Education and Research in Switzerland, Europe and the wider world. Rector of his University and President of the Swiss Rectors' Conference, he then served numerous international university organizations, governmental and non-governmental. His excellent knowledge of the sector inspired him to create and conduct the Glion Colloquium. Howard Newby is Vice-Chancellor Emeritus at the University of Liverpool, UK. He has been Vice-Chancellor of two other universities (Southampton and West of England), head of the UK Economic and Social Research Council and CEO of the Higher Education Funding Council for England. He was formerly professor of Sociology at the University of Essex and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was knighted in 2000 for services to higher education.
