The Society of Intelligent Murderers by Robin Vicary

'The Society of Intelligent Murderers' is set in 1970s England and France. Detective Chief Inspector Harry Rainham is tasked with reviews of a number of suspicious deaths where relatives had appeared dissatisfied with the initial police investigation. Close to retirement and with an unwell wife at home, he forms a team with two young women detectives. They quickly unearth three bizarre apparently unrelated cases, and as each investigation progresses, it becomes apparent that the murderers are linked by seemingly mysterious blackmail attempts. There also appears to be a link to the poem 'The Waste Land', and possibly to the story of 'Rebecca'. The novel progresses through moments of danger for all involved until it climaxes with a series of alarming events.
Robin Vicary went on a short story course at the City University in 2017 taught by Katy Darby, and left determined to write a novel. He has written: * 'The Pendant Sapphire' (2018) - a historical novel set in the late 19th century in London, Paris and St. Petersburg and featuring the theft of a Faberge Egg. * 'A Dangerous Affair' (2019) - a collection of short stories. * 'An Adoration of Beauty' (2021) - a historical novel based on the travels of a painting of the Adoration of the Magi, from its creation by Sandro Botticelli in the fifteenth century in Florence. It journeys through 18th-century Rome, with David Livingstone across southern Africa in the 19th century, ending in London and Florence in the 20th century. * 'How the Light Shines' (2022) - a novel of diamonds, romance and espionage set in 1930s South Africa and England, published by The Conrad Press. Robin lives with his family in North London, where he was previously a gastroenterologist.
